Eileen asked us for a collection of candid images for her family. I proposed her to also capture some portraits during the session, as I love those family shootings where after the shooting I can show my clients a nice set of varied formal portraits to frame back home. It was a perfect occasion for that, as the family composes of four brothers, three married couples, two families with children, one couple, and grandma. There were many opportunities of capturing nice formal portraits of the smaller groups, and then a large group including everyone.

We met just by their resort beach to the very end of it and outside the property, as an alternative to moving a large group with children. We started the session nearby, by the beach, combining posed family portraits to hang on the walls, with candid photos of the children and each couple, then all cousins, all brothers, etc… Working with children can be tricky. Our main recommendation is to be patient when working with children. Also, the ambience should be quiet if you want to get the child attention. Check if he will grab something you give him, or maybe react to an object, something on your hand, maybe start a conversation at his/her level, etc…

As I say, shooting a child is not always easy, each photographer has his tricks, and you also must develop yours to approach this type of shootings!
